Misconceptions misconceptions, these shitty things gets everybody, lol. Why do we assume things we don’t know but somehow we are sure that it’s true? Of course we have the “if it barks like a dog, then it is a dog” thing which just makes you look stupid when you discover that it’s actually not a dog, it just barks like one.
For example, it’s Christmas season, a time to be merry and show love so you in your bubble assume that’s how the rest of the world will play out but it turns out that when you went Christmas shopping you witnessed so many things, like the woman crying because her bag had been cut from the handle or the beggar on the road that had enough change to give to Iya Milikat after you presented her with a one thousand naira note 😳.
In my case, I was unaware of the man following me behind and I never got that inkling, that divine disturbance in your subconscious that warns you about danger. Nope, I was in my own bubble, thinking of the things I wanted to buy (by the way, the first rule of Market 101 is to shine ya eyes), I was mostly blind at this point.
But my friend, God bless her! You remember Sola? Yes, Sola was the one who noticed, who turned around to face the man, she must have looked so fierce for she had the man turning back and changing his direction.
“You just dey waka, when they theif your purse, carry you join, now then you go know”
My Sola, delightful as always.
Anyways, my purse was safe and so was I. But it’s Christmas right? Love and merry…Wrong! Not everybody feels that way, some have missions, ulterior motives and your good cheer is just another sign that says “here I am, a good mark for your con”
Sad but true, so as you go about cheering, loving, merrying, shine ya eyes. Don’t forget that part!
Another misconception people have is, everyone looking at you is judging you or cares about what you’re doing. Wrong! Sometimes, people are just bored and you’re simply the next passerby (unfortunately for you) they’re feasting their gaze on. In Naija speak, no be everybody wey send you.
We should let go of this mentality in the coming year. I’ve seen people with great personalities wring their hands over the thoughts of other people, and little by little, they lose their spark, they become too conscious of other people. The amazing thing is, it doesn’t even matter, but we’ve been groomed from young to assume that the world gives a fuck who you are and what you do. That thinking is wrong. The world only cares about the things that favour them, and if you’re one of the favoured, I’m praying for you (really).
How do I know this? At this point, I’ll introduce Makoko, a floating slum in the mega city that is Lagos. For years the inhabitants have complained of lack of electricity, clean water, Education, Health services and till now, nothing has been done.
For those of you that don’t know Lagos, kindly google it (Google is your friend), you’ll see beautiful places, tall buildings, events and so on and you’ll also see pictures that show the slums Lagos state government wish did not exist. Makoko for one.
If they were benefiting from Makoko do you think they wouldn’t have fixed up that place or atleast provided a form of health care and Education for them? They keep threatening to evict them from there but with no provision for housing and job offers. If I go on, the vibe of this post will change. I’ll create a post specially to address issues like this but I hope you get the point. And before anyone says anything, who makes up the government? People! People like you and me so do we still want to place our destiny in their hands or are we going to take it back!
The point is, own your shit and take care of yourself. If you’re good, don’t stress about it, if you have money, embrace it and use it as well as you please as long as you’re not intentionally hurting anyone (I can’t avoid it, I just have to do this; spend it wisely, help people and then get out, don’t sound any trumpet). It’s these thoughts, these things that weigh you down, limit you even. Just do you in order to live freely, you know yourself better than anyone.
As we’re entering the new year, let go of every misconceptions, both the one that concerns you and the ones that don’t. Share in the comment section, other misconceptions you’re aware of. I think the direction of my post went left but we’ll leave it like that *wink wink.
This might be my last post for the year, not sure but anyways, I wish you all a prosperous new year, good health and growth in every area of your life🎊
Till next time, be brazen!
