AT THE BEACH
He saw her building a sandcastle with his friend Temi, and frowned. He quickly looked away and focused on the game of Frisbee before his other friends would notice. What did he care? She was just a girl.
When Temi left, she looked at Bayo’s way. The boy hadn’t even looked in her direction, not once. Was he ignoring her? Who did he think he was? And he could throw so well. Her little girl heart fluttered a bit.
Look away! He mustn’t catch you staring, she told herself.
When she noticed a shadow over her, she smiled secretly before throwing a hostile glare over her shoulder and yes, she’d known it would be Bayo. Always fighting, never friends.
“Do you mind?” She asked angrily.
He snickered.
“You and Temi didn’t build it well. I was just going to get water to drink and decided to save your castle.”
“Babies.” He muttered loud enough so she could hear it.
Yes, that sounded mature with a hint of ‘I don’t really care what you decide’, he thought.
“You’re not my prince. Temi and I are the prince and princess of the castle. He’s the one that gets to save it. Not you.” Though Tessa was little, she understood pride.
“He’ll be back soon.” Her tone was smug. “He only went to get snacks for me.”
She wanted to laugh at the look on his face. He was no longer smirking but frowning. She’d made him frown! Wasn’t that brilliant!
Fuming, Bayo glared at her.
“Temi is my friend. Why don’t you play with your ‘girl’ friends―” He sneered, “and leave my friends alone.”
“Wait―” He paused as if in thought, “that’s because you don’t have any friends. Nobody wants to be friends with you so you steal my friends!”
She was going to cry, her bottom lip was already jutting out.
“Tessa, I’m sorry!”
He reached for her just as she pushed him away, the force making him land on the sandcastle, destroying it.
“Leave me alone…you’ve spoilt my castle!” She shouted at him before running away. He quickly stood and dusted himself. He hadn’t meant to make her cry. He’d only wanted her to know she couldn’t best him. Now he didn’t feel like bragging about it as he watched her running figure.
The sandcastle…. Oh well!
HIGH SCHOOL
“Why are you crying?” Bayo asked Tessa.
Lately, everywhere he went he kept seeing her. Even when she wasn’t there.
Finding her alone without her chick friends or the guys that always surrounded her was like finding gold. Not that he’d let on.
Tessa quickly wiped her tears. She’d broken things off with George, because of that; George had taken a swipe at her pride, not her heart. Never her heart, that, she’d kept hidden.
“What do you want? And I wasn’t crying. There was something in my eye and I came in here to get it out.” She gave the excuse and grabbed her books, about to leave. He stood in her way.
“I don’t think so, but whatever. Where’s Georgie or have you two broken up?” He asked.
Maybe that was why George was ranting in class. If that was the reason she was crying, he was going to pound George after school hours.
Tessa smiled wickedly and stuck out her hip.
“Yes, we have. In fact, I did the breaking. You see, I don’t waste my time with guys that don’t know how to feel up a girl or even make me want to feel him up.” She said with a pointed look, her eyebrow arched.
“And that’s what you and Georgie―” She sneered, “have in common.”
With a laugh, she swung away from him.
“Bye!”
“Not so fast!” He grabbed her hand and drew her back.
She was teasing him, he could see the look on her face, the victory in her eyes.
“You think you’ve won.” He asked, holding her close.
“I know I have. What are you going to do about it?” She smirked.
When he frowned, she kept her look in place. Her heart was beating seriously. They were sixteen and almost all her life, she’d been fixated on him and now they were both here, alone. If he kissed her now, he would be her first kiss.
Of course, he wouldn’t think so. She’d teased and left with a lot of guys in front of him. Hoping to get him jealous and push them to this point.
But it was Bayo, High School bad boy; he’d probably tease her right back and leave her hanging dry.
The look on his face changed as he lifted her by the waist and placed her on the desk.
“I don’t care if you just broke up.” He slowly pushed up her skirt, “I’m not George and there’s nothing we have in common.”
His hands were shaking but he prayed she wouldn’t notice. Having Tessa here with him, like this, was like a dream come true.
“I’m going to kiss you and you’re going to kiss me right back.” He said, his voice full of confidence.
The look in her eyes challenged him.
“We’ll see.” Was all she said.
And he did. They did and it was….Heaven!
