CHUKWUEBUKA

I saw Chukwuebuka on TikTok doing a chilli challenge for a $100 in America, the land of his dreams.

Then in Uni, he was the most handsome boy in my class, the one all girls had eyes for, till he left to continue his education in America.

America, the land of his dreams, it was all he’d talked about days leading to his departure. He’d gotten visa and had broken my heart.

We’d promised to keep in contact but then, promises fail, and I never heard from him until this TikTok video.

My heart is broken once again, I am crying for the agile young man I fell in love with. I am crying for the lost dreams and misplaced priorities…Chukwuebuka is not living it up in America. He is not on Fortune’s 40 Under 40 like we’d planned, neither is he healthy. Chukwuebuka, Ebuka as his mother fondly called him, resides in Skid Row, a protruded belly and an acquired brown tooth from drinking and smoking the leaves of our fathers. Chukwuebuka is no more, he died years ago when he crossed the borders to America. This apparition, this one of striking resemblance to my baby boy goes by the name, Buka with an ‘r’.
