Rock-Bottom

What does it mean to start again?

To hit rock-bottom?

My aunty used to tell me the story of a man who went far into the sea, never to be seen again. He’d lost everything, and one day he locked his house, waved at the neighbour and never returned home.

His wife could not be consoled. She didn’t understand why her husband had suddenly found the urge to go to the sea; he never went to the sea while he was alive. For a long time, she believed someone had done that to him.

But all evidence proved that he drove to the sea by himself, picked out a boat, paid for it and went his merry way. Whatever had led him to take that decision was a mystery. A man like Dike didn’t avoid setbacks, he faced them.

My aunty tells me that story everytime I have my episodes. It was her roundabout way of saying, don’t keep silent, embrace your emotions. Be sad, ugly cry and go ahead and ask God why? Why you are the way you are, why your life is the way it is. Once you’re tired and can’t cry no more, rebuild. Pick yourself up and face life another day.
